Loraine Sumner, MD, has joined the Mercer Medicine care team as a primary care physician. Dr. Sumner joins Jennifer Sanders, PA, already established as a primary care provider at Mercer Medicine Clay County, located at 101 Hartford Road West, Suite 1, in Fort Gaines, Georgia. Dr. Sumner has special interests in geriatrics and preventative medicine and looks forward to continuing to serve southwest Georgia.

“I am honored to return to Mercer University and Mercer School of Medicine to continue my commitment to internal medicine and rural medicine," said Dr. Sumner. "I have spent the last 18 years serving in my home community and hope to utilize that growth and experience in a new setting. I look forward to seeing patients from Fort Gaines and Plains and working with my teams in both locations. I strive to make patients feel comfortable and confident in the care they receive.  I never want anyone to feel like they are just a number to us.”

Dr. Sumner was born and raised in Tifton, Georgia, where she graduated from Tift County High School as valedictorian in 1994. She won a presidential scholarship to attend Mercer University College of Liberal Arts, graduating with honors in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a minor in biology. She continued her education at Mercer University School of Medicine, graduating as a Doctor of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Sumner completed her internal medicine residency at the Medical Center of Middle Georgia (now Atrium Health Navicent). In 2006, she returned to Tifton to practice at Affinity Health Group, subsequently bought out by Tift Regional Medical Center and became Southwell Clinic. Dr. Sumner joined Mercer Medicine in spring 2024 practicing as a primary care physician at both the Plains and Clay County locations.

"We are excited to have Dr. Sumner at Mercer Medicine of Clay County," said PA Sanders. "Her presence will provide the physician's component to our healthcare team and allow us to expand our services in Clay County and our neighboring counties."

Mercer Medicine Clay County provides primary care services, including annual physicals, sport physicals, women’s health exams, immunizations, onsite x-ray, EKGs, point-of-care (rapid) testing, and onsite lab testing, to the citizens of Clay, Randolph, and surrounding counties.
