Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic fields to influence your brain’s natural activity. It is an effective option for treating depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and other brain-related conditions.

How does TMS work?

During a TMS session, an electromagnetic coil delivers magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells in the brain. Since brain cells and nerves communicate using tiny electrical signals, these pulses can influence brain activity. TMS specifically targets areas involved in emotions and decision-making, helping to ease depressive symptoms and obsessive thinking or behaviors.

Why consider TMS?

TMS is often recommended when other treatments, such as medication or therapy, have not been effective. The procedure is:

  • Noninvasive – No surgery or anesthesia is required.
  • Well-tolerated – Side effects, if any, are usually mild and temporary.
  • Effective – Many patients experience significant symptom relief.

What conditions can TMS treat?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved TMS for the treatment of several conditions. At Mercer Medicine, we offer TMS therapy for:

  • Depression
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

What to expect during TMS treatment

Your first appointment will include an initial assessment to determine the correct dose of magnetic pulses and the precise area of the brain to target. Throughout the treatment, periodic re-evaluations will take place to ensure effectiveness. During each session:

  • You’ll sit comfortably while the magnetic coil is placed against your head.
  • When the machine is activated, you’ll feel a mild tapping sensation on your scalp, followed by brief pauses.
  • The procedure typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the stimulation pattern used.
  • You’ll remain awake and alert throughout the session.

Are there any side effects?

TMS is generally well-tolerated. Some patients may experience mild side effects at the beginning of treatment, such as:

  • Temporary discomfort at the treatment site
  • Mild headaches

These symptoms usually subside after the first few sessions. There is no downtime, so you can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment.
